The literary and archaeological sources deliver us precious details of the various combat sports and on the equipment necessary for their practice. The glove is the most symbolic accessory of the practice of ancient boxing. There are numerous Greek and Latin terms which indicate the boxing glove in the ancient texts. Not only they generally correspond to particular types but also to some evolutions which are not always easy to determine. Contrary to the fact that think most of the researchers, it would seem that pancratiasts also used metacarpal protections lighter than those used by boxers.
