VARIA - ARTICLES

Acknowledgement of receipt

At this stage, authors will be notified of the successful receipt of their submission and, if necessary, of any required formal amendments to ensure compliance with the “Bibliography and Style Guidelines” of CHAM Publishing.

Proposals that do not adhere to the submission, bibliography, and style requirements will be declined and returned to the authors.

Estimated timeframe: 1-2 weeks

Preliminary review

The selection of texts is the responsibility of the Editorial Board. They conduct an initial reading of all submissions and determine whether they should proceed to external peer review.

Consideration will be given to the originality, relevance, methodological rigour, currency of the cited bibliography, quality of writing, and the thematic suitability of the proposal in relation to the scope of the journal or editorial series.

All decisions are communicated to the authors.

Estimated timeframe: 2-3 weeks

External peer review

Preparing external peer review

All article proposals are assessed by two external referees through a double-blind peer review system, in which neither authors nor referees are aware of each other's identities.

Proposals resulting from invitations issued by guest editors of thematic dossiers are likewise subject to preliminary evaluation by the Editorial Board and reviewed by two external referees under a double-blind peer review system.

The selection of external referees is the sole responsibility of the Editorial Board, in accordance with CHAM Publishing’s Editorial Policy.

Preparing materials for referees

Although authors are responsible for anonymising their manuscripts, the Editorial Officer checks again them before converting the files into a format that preserves the integrity of the originals.

Contacting selected external referees: availability check

External reviewers selected by the Editorial Board are contacted via the OJS editorial management system to confirm their availability to carry out the review within an agreed timeframe.

Review deadlines: 3-4 weeks (journal articles), 3-4 months (books).

External peer review

Once the invitation has been accepted, the Editorial Officer provides external referees with access to the materials.

Reviewers are required to complete all fields of the online review form and provide a reasoned opinion as to whether the manuscript is suitable for publication.

They are encouraged to offer constructive suggestions to the author, aimed at revising and further developing specific ideas to significantly improve the work.

Upon completion, the review form is made available to the Editorial Board.

It is the responsibility of the Editor-in-chief (for editorial series) or the Editorial Board (for journals) to analyse the reviews.

If the reviews are not unanimous, the final decision rests with the Editor-in-chief or the Editorial Board, who may request an assessment by a third external referee.

Notification of results

Notifications regarding the outcome of the external peer review are sent automatically via the OJS editorial management system.

Final revisions

Revisions based on the suggestions of external reviewers must be implemented in accordance with the Editorial Policy. If the revisions do not adequately address the reviewers’ suggestions, the Editor-in-chief may return the proposal to the authors for a final round of adjustments.

Estimated deadline: 2 weeks

Copyediting

Texts submitted in Portuguese will undergo orthographic and grammatical revision. This process will not alter the authors’ writing style. Texts submitted in other languages will be subject to formal editing only.

At this stage, minor corrections may be introduced, provided they do not compromise the meaning or content of the manuscript. All amendments must be tracked using the “Track Changes” feature in the file.

Proof review

Authors will be provided with a single set of proofs for review and the introduction of minor corrections. At this stage, substantial changes to the structure or length of the text are not allowed.

Only corrections made directly on the PDF using tools such as “Comments”, “Highlighting Text,” or other Acrobat features will be accepted.

Deadline for returning proofs: 2 weeks.

Printed copies

Each author will receive 1 printed copy of the journal volume in which their contribution is published. The same applies to thematic dossier coordinators and referees.

THEMATIC DOSSIERS

Submission of proposals

RES accept proposals for thematic dossiers. These may be submitted either spontaneously or by invitation from the Editor-in-chief or the Editorial Board. Proposals must include:

1) The dossier’s coordination by at least two experts, one of whom must be affiliated with an institution external to NOVA FCSH;

2) ORCID identifiers for the coordinators (or, if unavailable, a link to another online CV);

3) Abstract in Portuguese and English (up to 250 words);

4) Keywords (up to 5);

5) Additionally, coordinators may submit a list of proposed articles by invited authors, ensuring that contributions from CHAM researchers do not exceed 30%.

Acknowledgement of receipt

Handled by the Editorial Officer within a maximum of 2 weeks.

Selection process

The selection of dossier proposals is the responsibility of the Editorial Board, which considers the originality, relevance, and suitability of the topic to the journal’s scope, as well as its potential scheduling.

A decision is communicated to the proposers within approximately one month.

Timeline and call for papers

Upon approval of the thematic dossier proposal, the Editorial Officer prepares a publication timeline and the call for papers in collaboration with the Editor-in-chief and the dossier coordinators.

The call for papers is published on the journal’s website and CHAM’s official channels. Active involvement by the dossier coordinators in disseminating the call via their contacts and networks is strongly encouraged.

Acknowledgement of receipt of article proposals

Handled by the Editorial Officer within a maximum of one week.

Preliminary review

The selection of proposals is the responsibility of the dossier coordination and the journal’s Editor-in-chief.

Notification of acceptance or rejection of the proposal is communicated to authors within the timeframe indicated in the call for papers.

Once proposals are accepted, full articles must be submitted by the deadline specified in the call for papers.

From this point onwards, the standard article peer review procedure applies.

BOOK REVIEWS & NEWS

The publication of book reviews and news items follows the same editorial procedures as outlined above, with the exception of external peer review, and implies acceptance of the terms defined in CHAM Publishing’s Editorial Policy.

Selection

The selection of texts is the responsibility of the Editorial Board, which reads all proposals and decides on their publication.

The Editorial Board considers the relevance, rigour, writing quality, and suitability of each proposal for the journal’s profile.

In cases of disagreement, an external opinion may be sought.

All decisions regarding received proposals are communicated to the authors.
