Cadences: Attentional Moves in the Arts and Everyday Life

Abstract

Issue 64 of the Revista de Comunicação e Linguagens is organised around cadence and the fall lodged within it, treating attention as something we cultivate, lose, and recover together rather than as a private resource. Two concerns organise the issue: attention as a collective and ecological affair, distributed across bodies, mediations, and milieus; and attention as inseparable from movement and the body. Moving across dance, cinema, pedagogy, and media theory, the contributions ask how the arts of attention make room for other ways of attending to the world and of composing it together.

Author Biographies

Sílvia Pinto Coelho, NOVA University of Lisbon, School of Social Sciences and Humanities. ICNOVA — NOVA Institute of Communication, Portugal

A multidisciplinary artist specialised in dance and a researcher at ICNOVA-UNL, Sílvia Pinto Coelho holds a PhD degree in Communication Sciences (FCSH-UNL), a degree in Anthropology (FCSH-UNL) and a Bachelor’s degree in Dance (ESD-IPL). She has been working professionally as a choreographer and dancer since 1996, having produced, choreographed and participated in research projects, live performances and films with artists from various disciplines.

 

Erik Bordeleau, NOVA University of Lisbon, School of Social Sciences and Humanities. IFILNOVA — Institute of Philosophy, Portugal

Erik Bordeleau is a philosopher, fugitive planner and media theorist. He works as a researcher in cinema and philosophy at NOVA University Lisbon (IFILNOVA). He co-founded and co-directs The Sphere, a Web 3.0 research-creation project exploring new ecologies of funding and developing a regenerative commons for the performing arts, and facilitates the Cosmo-Financial Study Group at weirdeconomies.com. His work draws on political philosophy, contemporary art, world cinema, blockchain cultures, and media theory, with a sustained focus on the question of value in its techno-mediatic and financial forms.

Luís Mendonça, NOVA University of Lisbon, School of Social Sciences and Humanities. ICNOVA — NOVA Institute of Communication, Portugal

He received his PhD in Communication Sciences from the NOVA School of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH), with a dissertation published in 2017 by Edições Colibri under the title Photography and Modern Cinema: The Amateur Filmmakers of the Post-War Period. He has published numerous essays and books on cinema and photography, most recently Majestic Immobility: A Contribution to a Theory of the Film Still (Edições 70) and, as co-author, The Cinema of Words: Interviews from À Pala de Walsh (Linha de Sombra). He is co-editor of the cinephile website À Pala de Walsh and an Invited Assistant Professor at NOVA FCSH's Department of Communication Sciences. He also teaches at the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema) and Universidade Lusófona, and has previously taught at the Portuguese Institute of Photography (Instituto Português de Fotografia) and Atelier de Lisboa. He has supervised more than twenty Master's dissertations in the fields of cinema and photography and currently supervises Master's and PhD research in the same areas. Following the completion of several experimental short films and digital essay films, he is currently preparing the feature-length documentary Vestígios (Traces), supported by the Portuguese Film Institute (ICA), the Radio and Television of Portugal (RTP) and produced by Midnight Express. Since September 2019, he has been a programmer at the Portuguese Cinematheque – Museum of Cinema (Cinemateca Portuguesa – Museu do Cinema) and, from July 2025 to January 2026, also served as the institution's Press Officer.
