In this essay, I aim to outline how Fernando Pessoa conceives and organises his prose through an analysis of significant documents that resurrect the discussion about the specificities of literary text classifications. I will also observe that in Pessoa's later years, prose as a genre evolved towards equalling poetry (the preferred genre for developing heteronyms) in artistic and aesthetic quality. Prose ceased to be exclusively used to develop the dialogue between the main heteronyms, and instead became an aesthetic form that harbours literary personas, such as Maria José, Barão de Teive and Bernardo Soares. I also intend to analyse some of Eduardo Lourenço’s positions regarding the discussion of genres in Fernando Pessoa's work, attempting to understand some preconceived ideas about Pessoa's prose.
