Based on the essays collected in Estudos sobre a poesia de Fernando Pessoa (1958), this article analyzes the evolutionary journey of Adolfo Casais Monteiro’s critique of Fernando Pessoa, from his agreement with the parameters of presença as an evaluative principle to the confrontation with the critique of Gaspar Simões and the partial adoption of a new critical vocabulary, resulting from the contact with the theoretical work of Pessoa himself.
This article is the result of rewriting part of the final chapter of my master's thesis, entitled A construção do cânone crítico sobre Fernando Pessoa: a crítica de Adolfo Casais Monteiro, UNICAMP, 2000.
