This article proposes an intertextual reading between the dramatic poem Fausto (Faust) and the short story A Hora do Diabo (The Hour of the Devil) — two unfinished works which are deemed essential for understanding the philosophy of Pessoa’s poetry and its “occultist affiliation”. The figure of the devil is absent in Pessoa’s Fausto, with the traditional confrontation between the devil and Faust taking on the appearance of the main character’s inner conflict. It could be said that this absence is compensated by the strong presence of the devil in A Hora do Diabo, where it is treated in a rather heterodox manner. The devil is actually replaced by Faust in a fragment of the short story.
